Feeling dizzy when the weather heats up? You're not imagining it — hot days really can leave you lightheaded.

I'm Dr. Xu He, DO, an internal medicine physician at Golden Gate Health. Dizziness during the summer is something we hear about often, and while it's usually harmless, it's also your body's way of telling you something needs attention.

Why Heat Can Make You Dizzy

When temperatures climb, your body works harder to keep cool. A few things happen at once that can leave you feeling unsteady:

  • Your blood vessels widen. To release heat, blood vessels near the skin dilate. That can lower your blood pressure and reduce blood flow to the brain for a moment — especially when you stand up quickly.
  • You may not be drinking enough. On busy summer days, it's easy to fall behind on fluids without realizing it.

Simple Ways to Stay Steady

Most heat-related dizziness can be prevented with a few habits:

  • Take breaks in the shade or indoors when you're active outside
  • Stand up slowly after sitting or lying down
  • Dress for the weather in light, breathable clothing
  • Be extra mindful during the hottest parts of the day

When to Seek Medical Attention

A brief dizzy spell that passes after you rest and rehydrate is usually nothing to worry about. But don't ignore what your body is telling you. Reach out to a provider or seek care if dizziness:

  • Comes with chest pain, a racing heart, confusion, fainting, or trouble breathing
  • Happens alongside signs of heat exhaustion, like heavy sweating, nausea, or weakness

Dizziness can have many causes beyond the heat — including blood pressure, blood sugar, medications, and heart or inner-ear conditions — so if it's a recurring problem, it's worth getting evaluated. If you've been feeling dizzy, our team is here to help you get to the bottom of it.
